Tenerife´s Carnival



The Tenerife´s Carnival is one of the most important festivals, and has international repercussion, every February you can enjoy of one of the most important event of its kind on the world, in Santa Cruz, capital of Tenerife. One of most important part of the tenerife´s carnival is people disguising, but there are also many prizes and competitions (murgas, comparsas, rondallas, agrupaciones) in the streets or in closed places of each municipality.

The beginning of the festivities is marked by La elección de la Reina, this is a very important event because is expected to represent Tenerife at various trade fairs throughout the world, promoting tourism, so it is a very important post. 

Two days later La elección de la Reina she pass through the streets of Santa Cruz on a giant float, accompanied by many other people, all in fancy dress. 


After this Tenerife is full of party whith people walking the streets whith all kind of custome (so elaborated or simple).


The end of the carnival came always whith El entierro de la sardina (always on wednesday) There is a giant model of a sardine, made of papier mache and it is carried in a sort of "funeral procession", accompanied by a large group of "grieving" women - not necessarily realwomen - down to the harbour. There, it is set on fire, everybody wails their heads off and there is a firework display.
